From Momos to Chowmein, here’s a list of lame statements given by Indian politicians on food
The whole world sees India as the largest democracy with rich resources, majority of young people, and booming digital technology, but the country is only obsessed with food. Ban beef, meat, onion, garlic, momos, Chinese but increase taxes on liquor, cigarette, and other drugs.
Overlooking the actual unhealthy food items consumed by the people on a massive scale, BJP legislator Ramesh Arora of Jammu on Wednesday made an in‘sane’ statement like other political leaders in past, asking the country to ban Chinese food and momos.
“Momos have been found to be the root cause of several life-threatening diseases, including cancer of the intestine,” Arora said on Wednesday.
Apart from meat and beef, there are were debates on other food items that were on the brink of banning:
Chowmein
Earlier, Jitendar Chattar, leader of a Khap Panchayat said, “To my understanding, consumption of fast food contributes to such incidents. Chowmein leads to hormonal imbalance evoking an urge to indulge in such acts.”
Milk Sweets
The leaders called off the consumption of milk sweets in 1970s in Delhi to avoid the shortage of milk in the city.
Maggi
This two-minute snack was banned due to an excessive inclusion of lead content in it.
Brinjal
A crop like a brinjal was banned by the government in past.
Chicken
Believing the rumours of bird flu, a disease that affects birds, and not humans also became a cause to call the bird dirty, and many Indians avoided having it although according to doctors, the meat can be cooked well and consumed.
Can Indian politicians think beyond food?
In a nutshell, the politicians are not concerned about the health of the people, rather they are playing the cast and religion card to mold the majority of the people in the country by promoting saffronisation, which overshadowing the promise of development made by the Bharatiya Janta Party.
Unfortunately, the forced food laws have ignited the cow charmers and the country is promoting ‘food fascism’ which is actually killing a lot of people rather than making them healthy.
The country is filled with an inhibition of cow vigilante who has been killing the cattle farmers for illogical reasons. They hear some news on some WhatsApp group and kill a bunch of people accusing them of cow slaughtering. One such similar case surfaced the internet, where Mohammad Naeem was captured making a groveling apology towards the activists in Jharkhand.
Nevertheless, all this bloodshed is happening in the country for food habits. A few days ago, the newly elected chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath banned all the slaughter houses in the state, calling it a statewide-ban on meat supply.
Moreover, the central government has passed an order to all the states to ban the consumption of beef. As of now, around 18 states have agreed on the norm while some states like Kerela and West Bengal are opposing the order.
The Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had said, “What we eat cannot be decided by Delhi or Nagpur,” here Delhi is pointed towards the central government and Nagpur towards the the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which is headquartered in Maharashtra’s Nagpur
