AIIMS Delhi
The premium hospital and medical institution of the country, The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have been declared as an institution of national importance by an act of the parliament. Under the visionary guideline of the first Health Minister of our country, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, the first AIIMS was established in 1956 in Delhi. The institute functions autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The first institute was proposed to be set up in Calcutta by the then Prime Minister, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. However, it was turned down by the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Bidhan Chandra Roy, at the time. AIIMS has always topped the list of top medical colleges in India. The Week and Outlook magazines have also ranked it overall the best hospital in India, with also being the best in many individual fields such as the likes of Neurology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Gynecology, and Ophthalmology, much ahead of several other institutions.
The hospital sees a large number of patients (about 3.5 million in 2006) and still maintains high standards of quality. The excellence of AIIMS has to do with a variety of factors such as a smart class of dedicated employees, small class size, fantastic library facilities, research exposure, high class faculty, liberal clinically oriented teaching, continuum of coordinated care, adaptable workflow changes, ability to set its own curriculum, and open to technological advancements.
AIIMS Delhi offers various academic courses such as Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, Bachelor of Optometry, Bachelor of Science (Hons.) in Radiography, MD/MS, MD in Hospital Administration, Master of Dental Surgery, BSc (Hons.) in Nursing, MSc in Urology, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Physiology, Nuclear Medicine and many more. All the medical facilities that should be offered by a premium hospital are provided by AIIMS such as Anesthesiology, Biochemistry, Anti-Retroviral Treatment for HIV & AIDS treatment, Diabetics, Forensics Medicine and lots more.
Many renowned and distinguished doctors have worked at AIIMS, such as the internationally recognized physiologist Autar Singh Paintal, K Srinath Reddy who is the head of the Publich Health Foundation of India, the pioneer of liver transplants in India AS Soin, the Padma shri recipient Alka Kriplani, the contact lens specialist Vipin Buckshey and also various recipients of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for medical research, such as TC Anand Kumar who’s popularly known as the creator of the first documented test tube baby, Pradeep Seth who developed an HIV vaccine, a cardiovascular surgeon Janak Raj, Shashi Wadwa who’s a renowned neuroscientist and many more.
In 2012, The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (Amendment) Bill was introduced in the lower house to operationally launch six more AIIMS institutes. All the institutes operate under the aegis of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

AIIMS Bhopal:
The AIIMS Bhopal Hospital was inaugurated on 26 January, 2013. The Institute Body (IB), the highest decision-making group, was formed in July 2013. Dr. Surya Bali is working as Nodal officer of the Telemedicine Centre, which was established on 2 October, 2013. However, the foundation day was celebrated on 20 January, 2015 and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan was the chief guest at the occasion.
A first of its kind facility in India, the Pediatrics Sleep Lab, was introduced by the AIIMS Bhopal. A Sleep Lab to treat patients suffering from sleep disorders was also launched by the Director, Professor Nitin M Nagarkar, on 19 June, 2015. The hospital is the first from MP to get enrolled in the Online Registration System(ORS) which falls under the Ministry of Communications and IT. In the year 2015, the first state level inter-college Obstretics and Gynecology Quiz competition was conducted by the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology. The current director of the institution is Dr. Nitin M Nagarkar and Dr. Rajesh Malik is the dean.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar:
The first batch of MBBS with 50 students began on 21 September, 2012. The new batch consists of about 100 students from all across the country. The Student’s Union that was elected on 27 February 2015 organized the first ever inter AIIMS inter medics fest called CHIASMA 2K16 between February 4 and 7. The fest took in participation from other state and private medical colleges as well along with the other AIIMS institute who contended to showcase their talents. The astute Dr. Gitanjali Batmanabane who believes in ensuring transparency is currently the director of this branch.
On 29 November 2012, the institute launched a regional telemedicine centre on its campus. On 26th February 2014, they launched an e-transit pass, which acts as smart card for patients.
AIIMS Jodhpur:
The first academic session began from 17 September 2012 and there were a total of 50 students in the first batch of MBBS. Outdoor patient(OPD) services started at the AIIMS Jodhpur from 27 July 2013, making it the first of the six new AIIMS hospitals to establish OPD services with specialization in 15 areas. AIIMS also began with MD courses in Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, and Community medicine and Family medicine in the same year.
The institute is located on the outskirts of the city of Jodhpur. While the renowned Dr. Kuldeep Singh is currently the dean of the branch, Dr. Sanjeev Misra holds the positions of the director.
AIIMS Patna:
AIIMS Patna began its operations on 25 September 2012 and the first MBBS class had 50 students. Initially, the institute imparted training in four subjects- anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and community medicine. The institute also hosts a separate nursing college within its premises. This band of dedicated faculty member is led by Dr. Gitanjali Batmanabane as the director.
From the year 2013, the institute doubled the number of student intake, from 50 to 100. A cellphone application called Sankat Sanket was launched in July 2013 to help people in case of medical emergencies. As of January 2017, the total bed strength is beyond 400.
AIIMS Raipur:
AIIMS Raipur began its first batch of 50 students in September 2012, which increased to a 100 students since 2013. It’s the leading tertiary care centre in the state of Chattisgarh and hosts a 930-bedded hospital since February 2014. They celebrate the foundation day on 24 September every year.
State-of-the-art facilities are available at the institute including IPD services and AYUSH Services. The Central Library of AIIMS Raipur was awarded the ERMED usage award by the National Medical Library in 2016. It also received the Kayakalp Award for being one of the cleanest hospitals in the country. Under the directorial skills of Dr. Nitin Nagarkar, this institution has really come a long way!
AIIMS Rishikesh:
The academic sessions of AIIMS Rishikesh started in August 2012, inducting a batch of 50 students for the first MBBS course. The college of Nursing started from August 2013, with a batch of 60 students for their BSc Nursing course. The 200-bed hospital was inaugurated on 10 February 2014 by the then Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad. In July 2016, MD/MS courses began in Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology, Pathology, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Orthopedics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Ophthalmology, and Otorhinolaryngology.
The institute is led by a couple of highly educated professor doctors, Dr. Ravi Kant as the director and Dr. Surekha Kishore as the dean of the institution.
All the AIIMS in India provide the medical (MBBS/MD/MS/Paramedical/Health Science/Nursing) education and an entrance exam is held each year, for which an advertisement is posted in the leading newspaper. Also, the application forms are available on the website. The entrance examination is conducted by AIIMS Delhi, which is a national level exam for entry into any one of the seven premier colleges.
